Networking Tips

  • Practice saying your name and company in the mirror.
  • Prepare a statement that describes your business that is 15 seconds or less – keep it unique and memorable.
  • Write your nametag legibly; if your handwriting is not attractive, ask the registration volunteers to do it. Put your first and last name and your company name.
  • If your company does not provide nametags, consider having a professional one made. You can get nametags at any local engraving or awards shop for a nominal fee.
  • Put a keyword at the top of your nametag that describes your business (i.e. Accountant). This works especially well if your company name has initials. (i.e. GMA; Association)
  • Your nametag should always be placed on your right so that when shaking hands, the nametag is in the sight line.
  • Bring your business cards! For ladies, wear something with pockets so you don’t have to dig through your purse.
  • Practice your handshake with a friend so you are comfortable with your grip.
  • When you are introduced to someone, repeat their name to increase your chance of remembering. Then introduce that person to someone you know.
  • When you receive a business card, write on the back the date and place you met to help jog your memory when filing or searching through your stack of cards.
  • Bring a pen with you!
